This class would cover fall and winter gardening techniques: harvesting, cover crops, composting, season extention, pH testing and adjustment, irrigation system winterization. We can look back at the season and review successes and failures at the site, learning from the experiences to build a better garden for 2015. This class would take place entirely on-site in the UpGarden. We will walk through the site and identify existing pest/disease/nutrient deficiency issues discussing how to solve existing issues and how to prevent future problems. The class will examine proper harvesting timing and techniques, side dressing of fertilizers, irrigation adjustments, succession-planting strategies and a lot of time for Q and A. This class will focus primarily on watering and irrigation strategies. It will cover how water behaves in soil/plants and how to get the largest return from quick short waterings. We will also introduce the existing drip irrigation system and provide hands-on instruction designing, installing and maintaining the system in several arrangements for individual garden plots. This class will cover the overall basics. We will discuss the benefits and limitations of growing on a rooftop. It will cover issues related to structural weight limitations, soil management, fertilization strategies, sun exposure, drainage, pests/diseases, etc. It will include reviewing soil test results from 2013 and provide specific recommendations.

To maintain your plot, each gardener must volunteer at least 8 hours each season with at least 4 of those 8 hours completed at the UpGarden. Volunteer hours reports can be submitted monthly, but are needed for collection twice per year, July 15 and October 31.
